Unlike previous expressions which finished McCarthy’s six-year-old whiskey in different casks, this new expression was crafted by putting new make McCarthy’s into rum casks, which then aged for 6 years in Hood River. “This Limited Release is a rare opportunity to experience McCarthy’s without the influence of Oregon Oak,” said Caitlin Bartlemay, Master Distiller.
Casa Magdalena Rum begins its journey as the finest sugarcane, harvested from sun drenched fields in a volcanic valley in Guatemala. The cane juice is then transformed into molasses which is crafted in the Spanish tradition, meaning they use the fresh molasses before any sugar is extracted. The rum is distilled with meticulous care in copper pot stills, which infuse the rum with the true essence of the Caribbean, providing notes of sugarcane, vanilla and oak.
“Even though McCarthy’s is 26 years old as a brand, we feel we are only just scratching the surface on the depths of flavor and aroma we can explore, said Bartlemay. “While longtime fans will be familiar with the earthy, mineral, and campfire qualities in this dram, the influence of the rum changes how they are expressed while layering on some new and nuanced flavors.”
